Some people hear “ethics” and assume moralism: be nice, be pure, be good.
But ethics is not a mood. It is systems design.
In a networked life, trust is infrastructure. It is the difference between easy coordination and constant defensiveness. It is the difference between information flowing clean and everything turning into politics.
This piece is for people who want a structural, non-moralistic theory of trust that can be applied in organizations, communities, and close relationships.
Here is the core claim: ethics is physics. You do not act in isolation. You act inside the Entangled Firmament—the participatory field of reality we live in—where your choices become feedback in other people’s nervous systems, incentives, and strategies.

Game theory.
One definition up front: a Nash equilibrium is a stable set of strategies where no player can unilaterally improve their payoff by changing strategy while everyone else holds theirs. In one-shot trust dilemmas, the equilibrium is often defection.
In iterated settings with memory and consequences, cooperative strategies can become stable in a similar way: people do not deviate because the long-term loss outweighs the short-term gain. That is what I mean by a “Nash equilibrium of care.”
An everyday scenario:
Two people share a kitchen. Day after day, each person has a choice.
- Cooperate: clean up what you use, replace what you finish, and repair when you slip.
- Defect: leave the mess, leave the cost, and act as if it will be absorbed.
In a one-shot world, defection can pay: you save effort and pass the cost across. In an iterated world, it trains the other person to protect themselves. Sharing shrinks. Rules multiply. Warmth drains out. If the home reliably rewards early truth and repair (and reliably enforces boundaries when someone leaves the cost behind), cooperation becomes stable. People do not “stay clean” out of moral purity, but because deviation stops improving outcomes.
The question is how you build those conditions without pretending power is symmetric.
The Default: One-Shot Logic Produces Defection
The simplest trust problem in game theory is the Prisoner’s Dilemma.
Two players have a choice:
- Cooperate: take the honest, mutually beneficial path.
- Defect: take the selfish, exploitative path.
In a one-shot game, defection is often the “rational” move. In fact, it’s the Nash equilibrium: if the other player cooperates, defecting pays more; if they defect, defecting hurts you less. Even if you personally prefer cooperation, one-shot logic punishes trust.
That is why mistrust spreads so quickly in organizations, relationships, and communities. A few defections reshape everyone’s incentives. People stop telling the truth. They stop repairing. They start optimizing for appearances.
One-shot logic doesn’t just describe criminals. It describes normal people inside brittle systems.
The Upgrade: Real Life Is an Iterated Game
Most of life isn’t one-shot. It’s iterated.
One-shot: no memory -> Defect to avoid being the sucker.
Iterated: memory + reputation -> Conditional cooperation becomes viable.
Care-centered containers: regulation + clear agreements + repair -> Cooperation can become stable.
You meet again. You remember. You have a reputation. Your future depends on your past. In iterated games, “winning” by defecting can be locally rational and globally stupid. You may get a short-term payoff and a long-term cost: retaliation, exclusion, loss of access, loss of trust, and constant defensive effort.
This is where a “Nash equilibrium of care” can emerge: cooperation stays stable when it is conditional, remembered, and enforced through boundaries and repair. In equilibrium terms, unilateral defection stops improving your payoff because the system remembers and responds.
I’m not claiming a universal closed-form theorem here. The narrower claim is practical: in iterated games with memory, reputation, and consequences, persistent defection gets more expensive over time.
A minimal sketch:
- In one-shot Prisoner’s Dilemma terms, the payoff ordering is usually
T > R > P > S(Temptation to defect when the other cooperates, Reward for mutual cooperation, Punishment for mutual defection, Sucker’s payoff when you cooperate and the other defects). - In repeated play, future payoffs are discounted by continuation
probability
δ(think: how likely you are to meet again, and how much the future matters). - Cooperation can become stable when the discounted future loss from retaliation, exclusion, or reputational damage outweighs the one-shot gain from defection.
In ordinary terms: the highest short-term payoff is often to defect once. But in relationships you cannot take the gain and disappear. That move tends to create a long-term cost.
In practice, stable trust usually looks like:
- Cooperate by default (low friction, high speed).
- Verify and set boundaries (do not let yourself be exploited).
- Repair when there’s impact (so the relationship can keep compounding).
That is not saintliness. That is how you keep a network from degrading into constant defection.
Why “Care” Works: It Turns the Game Into a Different Game
Care is not just sentiment. It is a strategic posture that changes payoffs.
When a person or group reliably does three things—regulates, tells the truth, and repairs—other agents update their models. Cooperation becomes less risky. Information becomes cheaper. Coordination becomes faster. In Nash terms: cooperation becomes the best response more often because defection is met with boundaries, loss of trust, and enforced repair rather than quiet reward.
If mythic language is not for you, set the Dragon aside. The underlying point is the same: you are training yourself and your relationships to behave like an iterated game with clean feedback loops.
This is why these ethics are built on the Serene Center agreements:
- Pause to regulate: do not speak from reactivity.
- Honor Living-Consent: keep agreements clean and revocable.
- Pair truth with repair: protect reality and protect relationship.
In systems language: these practices reduce volatility, reduce miscalibration, and prevent defection cascades.
The Missing Variable: Power Asymmetry
There’s one place where “just cooperate” becomes manipulation.
Call this Structural Leverage: role, money, status, microphone. Leverage amplifies your signal. Your choices land louder than they would for someone without that leverage, and your mistakes have a bigger blast radius (more people get burned).
This is why power must pair with Proportional Responsibility: responsibility scales with leverage. The more power you hold, the cleaner your feedback loops must be, and the faster you must repair.
Game theory agrees. When players have unequal power, the “game” is not symmetrical. The weaker party often can’t safely defect or enforce boundaries. If you hold leverage and you defect (spin, punish, extract, gaslight), you can “win” for a while. But you are also degrading the system you depend on. You are building a world where no one tells you the truth.
That world eventually harms you.
The Dragon’s Strategy: Cooperate, Verify, Repair
If you want one line that translates “ethics is physics” into systems language, it’s this:
Trust is the compounding asset of iterated games.
Care is the strategy that protects the asset without turning you into prey.
It looks like:
- Cooperate when the risk is low and the feedback loop is intact.
- Verify when stakes rise (clear agreements, clean boundaries, transparency).
- Repair when impact happens (name it, own it, amend, update the system).
This is how you keep the network coherent without becoming naïve.
Concrete example: you agree to meet someone at a certain time and you do not show up, with no message. Repair is not “sorry if you felt that way.” It is: name the impact (“I left you waiting”), own the choice (“I did not communicate”), amend (“I will make this right now”), and update the agreement (“next time I message as soon as I am delayed”).
