Part X

Practices, Meditations, and Related Techniques

This appendix surveys selected practices, meditations, exercises, techniques, frameworks, and approaches referenced in Path of the Dragon. It complements Part III’s Archetype Portals by offering a quick index for how each modality tends to land by tier and by capacity.

CRITICAL SAFETY & ETHICAL FOUNDATION (Preface): Return to the Preface covenant (Your Path, Your Pace) before choosing anything here.

To guide you safely, the practices are organized into the Three-Tier Readiness Net based on their potential intensity and risk:

This structure is designed to help you build a stable container before engaging with more potent and potentially destabilizing work.

Part V (The Crucible of Flesh) is the primary reference for nervous-system pacing, contraindications, and aftercare.

Always begin with Tier 1 — Grounding practices and proceed with caution, humility, and profound self-awareness.

Let the Preface’s covenant land here: select only what matches today’s capacity and set the rest aside until readiness returns.

Powerful practices can disrupt familiar patterns and surface intense material. This appendix is a reference, not complete instruction.

Your nervous system and history determine risk; move slowly, titrate intensity, and pendulate back to resources. Pause if you notice overwhelm, dissociation, panic, or compulsive drive.

Obtain medical guidance for conditions affected by breath, temperature, movement, or altered states. For relational/erotic/power work, ethical clarity and explicit, ongoing consent are non-negotiable.

When advised, work with licensed clinicians (e.g., trauma-informed therapists) or certified practitioners, and use sober, trained support for higher-risk Tier 2 and Tier 3 states. Document intentions, limits, and aftercare; impact outranks intent, and your well-being (and the safety of others) is your responsibility.

Use the Three-Tier Readiness Net: begin at Tier 1, titrate and pendulate, and pause at the first signs of overwhelm, dissociation, panic, or compulsive drive.

ABORT PROTOCOL: Stop now, return to Tier 1 grounding, orient to room/feet/breath, sip water, contact trusted support or clinician; do not re-enter until regulated.

These Tier 1 — Grounding practices establish the baseline capacity encouraged in the Preface’s Three-Tier Readiness Net. They are the essential groundwork for all deeper work on the Path and echo the mirrors named in Part III’s Archetype Portals.

Tier 1 — Awareness & Regulation

Tier 1 — Breathwork

Movement & Embodiment

Reflection & Contemplation

Tier 1 — Mindset & Approach

Tier 2 — Deepening practices may bring up challenging emotional or psychological material. They require a solid foundation in Tier 1 self-regulation and presence.

Professional guidance is often beneficial or recommended, and these modalities extend Part III’s Archetype Portals work by inviting you into relational and systemic mirrors.

Tier 2 — Awareness & Regulation

Tier 2 — Breathwork

Emotional & Shadow Work

Somatic & Trauma-Informed Principles

Movement, Energy & Embodiment

Relational & Ethical Practices

Creative & Contemplative Practices

Tier 2 — Mindset & Approach

Tier 3 — High Intensity practices carry a significant risk of psychological destabilization, retraumatization, or harm if undertaken without extensive preparation, a stable nervous system, rigorous ethical grounding, and often, expert, trauma-informed guidance.

They complete Part III’s Archetype Portals arc by pointing toward the Dragon’s Plunge mirror. Before attempting any Tier 3 modality, revisit the Preface’s Three-Tier Readiness Net, the Consent Readiness Snapshot and medical advisories in the Checklists and Materials appendix, and the Void Meditation guidance in Part VII. Do not attempt these practices lightly or prematurely.

Intense Breathwork & Altered States

Block C — Medical/Legal Caution

Breathwork: High-intensity breathwork can increase cardiovascular strain and may be contraindicated for some conditions. Common contraindications include significant heart disease, uncontrolled high blood pressure, history of stroke or TIA, known aneurysm, serious arrhythmias, glaucoma or major retinal disease, seizure disorders, pregnancy, and recent major surgery. Always discuss these modalities with a qualified clinician before participating, and treat “no” from a clinician as binding.

Shadow, Power & Sexuality Work

This appendix gathers the primary modalities explicitly referenced in the manuscript into the three-tier system above.

This section gathers additional modalities mentioned in passing or as adjacent supports, without full step-by-step protocols. Treat them as pointers for further study, not complete instruction, and apply the same harm-reduction principles before engaging.

Safety Advisory: These modalities are not self-study practices. Participate only with appropriately licensed or certified professionals who can pace, contain, and debrief the work. Attempting them solo can retraumatize, destabilize, or cause medical harm.

The following therapeutic modalities appear throughout the book as supports and referral options on the Path. They are listed here as potential support resources when working with this material.

For DBT, MBT, Schema Therapy, and TFP: work with a licensed mental health professional trained in the modality.
